Travel info

Since there are no (regular) flights to Tartu, you should fly or take a boat to Tallinn. For relatively cheap airline tickets from Scandinavian and some other European capitals I would recommend Estonian Air (the online ticket shop gives the best price).

Arrival:

Tallinn airport is located a bit outside of Tallinn, in the beginning of the road to Tartu. However, to get to Tartu, you'll first need to get to the bus (or train) station in Tallinn. Easiest way to do it, is to take a taxi - the price for a trip to the bus station is 50 EEK (3.5 EUR) or less (would cost a bit more from the harbor).
On the way back from Tartu to Tallinn, buses stop by the airport.

Currency:

The Estonian currency is Estonian kroon, EEK (1 EUR=15.6 EEK) - Euros are in general not (yet) acceptable. You can change money in the airport or harbor or you can use your bankcard or credit card for payments (credit cards are usually not accepted in taxis) or to retrieve money from bank automats.

To get from Tallinn to Tartu:

The trip from Tallinn to Tartu takes about 2hr 30min.

Bus:
There is one Tallinn-Tartu express bus in almost every 15 minutes until 23.00. The ticket costs, depending on the company about 100 EEK (7 EUR). You may get a reduction if you have an ISIC or ITIC card.

If your arrival time in Tallinn is later than 22.00, please inform Krista Fischer - special transportation can be arranged

Train:
There are only two fast trains per day from Tallinn to Tartu. This is a comfortable train with electric plugs and internet connection in the first class (although the quality of the railway is not that good). The first class ticket costs 120 EEK (1 EUR = 15.6 EEK), second class 70 EEK. The tickets are sold on train.

To get around in Tartu

When you arrive in Tartu, you can take a taxi from the bus station (price: 35 EEK = ca 2 EUR to 50 EEK = ca 3.5 EUR) to your hotel or guesthouse. A small map of the city center with important locations:
  1. Course venue: Faculty of Mathematics, J. Liivi 2
  2. Vikerkaare guesthouse, Vikerkaare 40
  3. 3
  4. Park hotel, Vallikraavi 23
